My Grandma’s Singer Featherweight

by Shelly

As a little girl I was told by my Grandma that she had a really old sewing machine and that it was her first sewing machine.  I always wanted her to show to me but I knew she was probably too busy cooking and cleaning for her large family.  My Grandma had 8 kids and went on to have 14 grandkids, I’m the oldest grandchild, plus many others that considered her their Grandma too.  I never pushed wanting to see the sewing machine.  Unfortunately my Grandma passed away a few years ago from breast cancer and about 6 months after her death my Grandpa had her Singer sewing machine out in a spare bedroom, set up as a sort of memorial to my Grandma.  I finally got to see her Featherweight.

A few months ago I was out of town and my mom sent me a text message, she texted that she’d left something at my house that my Grandpa wanted me to have.  I had no idea what she was talking about.  When I got home I saw the black case and knew immediately that my Grandpa had given me my Grandma’s featherweight sewing machine.  I was so happy and grateful.   My Grandpa told me that he KNEW my Grandma would want me to have her featherweight, so it’s now mine!  I think my Grandpa was right too, I think my Grandma would want me to have her cherished Singer featherweight sewing machine.  :-D

I haven’t had the time to take any pictures yet but plan on getting it out and taking pictures soon so I can post them here.

What a special gift! Those old machines are so pretty, even if they’re not being used to sew!
