The Amish women of Pennsylvania’s Lancaster county are famous for their exquisitely hand quilted quilts. Every quilt collector needs a genuine, one of a kind, Amish quilt in their collection.
The Amish learned to quilt shortly after immigrating to the US back in the 1800’s. Amish quilts were traditionally made from scraps of fabric left over from making clothing. The Amish waste very little and live simple lives.
Amish quilts typically feature 2-3 dominant solid fabric colors and a solid accent color. Printed fabrics and considered to worldly for the Amish and white fabric is rarely ever used in quilts. The quilt tops are pieced by hand or with treadle sewing machines, using solid colored fabrics. All quilting is done by hand.
Amish quilts have become so popular and in demand that recently over the years more and more Amish women have started to create quilts and sell them to supplement their family’s income.
